The term severe maternal morbidity (SMM) is used to collectively describe a number of life-threatening and debilitating conditions that occasionally occur during pregnancy and childbirth.
These conditions include:
- Severe preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and eclampsia
 - Severe hemorrhage
 - Maternal ICU admission
 - Surgical complications
 - Hysterectomy
 - Sepsis
 - Embolism, shock, and disseminated intravascular coagulation
 - Assisted ventilation
 - Cardiac conditions
 - Acute renal failure
 - Severe uterine rupture
 - Cerebrovascular events
